To Dust, winner of Narrative Audience Award at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, had the chance to capture a new audience last night at the Bedford Playhouse.

This movie has also been shown at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival and the Hamptons International Film Festival.

A special Q&A discussion with producers of this film Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola followed the screening of the movie. Audience members were able to ask this husband and wife film duo any burning questions they had after watching the film. The Q&A panel was moderated by Bedford Magazine’s editor, Jennifer Stahlkrantz.

During the discussion session, Mortimer explains how she and her husband became involved with this movie. To Dust, was submitted for a screenplay competition by Shawn Snyder in hopes of winning the prize award of $100,000. As a committee member, Mortimer would spend her nights reading countless screenplays. After reading each script, Mortimer would slam the papers on her bed- she did not find these stories compelling. When reading through the pages of To Dust, there was no thud of papers onto the bed. She discovered the winning screenplay. She woke husband Nivola up for him to read the work. From there on, this couple became producers of this project.

In the movie a grief-stricken Hasidic cantor deals with death of his wife in upstate New York. He befriends a local community college professor and together they go on a journey to understand what happens after a person passes away.

Beyond learning about the behind the scenes and motivations of creating this film, guests were able to hear about the personal lives of Mortimer and Alessandro- including how they met and previous projects they have worked on.

Emily Mortimer is an English actress, writer and producer with over 70 film and television credits to her name including roles in Mary Poppins Returns, The Pink Panther (with Steve Martin), Lars and the Real Girl and many more. Alessandro Nivola is an actor and producer and has over 40 film credits including the films, Face Off (with John Travolta), Jurassic Park III, American Hustle and numerous other works.
